Howdy Folks! It has been some time since we have sent a newsletter around! We hope that this letter finds you well!
Many changes have gone on around here over the last year & a half and we’d like to take the time now to update you on that! As you may recall, we were venturing into the dairy goat business
….. We’re happy to say that we have been milking goats since February 2015 (just over a year now) and so far we love it! We are unhappy to say however that we have not been able to milk our goats in the new barn we had started building in the fall of 2014 due to a lot of delays and dispute with the construction company we had hired. We are very fortunate though that our neighbors have allowed us to rent their barn until our dispute is settled in order to allow us to keep the goat her
We are planning on hosting an open house here once the construction of our new barn is complete. It may be some time yet but stay tuned! J d we had already purchased and to get our new venture going ASAP!
Our kids (children…not our goat kidsJ) are growing like weeds….Jacob will soon be 8 in April, Olivia 6 this summer and Emma just turned 4! Jacob has some interest in farm work however seems to be more interested in the electronic world thus far. He has played soccer last summer and plans on doing so this coming season as well. Olivia is a natural with animals and is very artistic, she will be taking dance lessons soon which she can’t wait to start! Emma is mommy’s “mini-me” as Dave and several family members have noted and she likes helping whenever she can! Our baby will be starting school this September!
Getting back to the farm; we have also been carrying on with raising our Grass-Fed Beef. This is something we feel that we are getting very experienced at and love doing. We are currently opening a limited (first come,
first serve) amount of beef freezer orders for this season (beef that will be ready late in the fall of 2016) to non-Cow Share Members. This means that you can place an order for a Split Half of Beef without being a Cow Share Member BUT we recommend considering investing in a Cow Share in order to guarantee a freezer order every year. With being in the dairy goat business there also comes a lot of offspring from our animals!! In order to have milk, the female goats must have babies about every 12 months. Last time we kidded (instead of calving for cows), we were getting a lot of twins and some triplets….our goat herd has more than doubled since we started! We have been selling the male offspring for meat and keeping the females to expand our herd but soon we will start selling females as well. This summer, we plan on grazing some goats for fall freezer orders in order to get a healthier grass-fed goat meat. This is something we had shied away from in the beginning because of our lack of experience with goats but we are confident we will be able to do so this season. I have added some info below about the health benefits of goat meat for those interested. We have been enjoying the meat ourselves and find it to be very tender. It has a taste all of its own and we have been handing out free samples to a
nyone interested in trying it for the first time!

As mentioned earlier on, we can give you a small sample of goat meat along with a recipe if you would like to give it a try before placing an order for a whole goat.
We will be raising these goats on pasture this season, and orders will be ready later in the fall. If you would like an order ASAP, this is possible as well but the goat will not be pasture-raided.

Health Benefits of Goat Meat
Goat Meat is a healthy alternative to beef and chicken because of its lower calorie, fat and cholesterol totals.
A staple in North African and Middle Eastern cuisine, goat meat comprises 63 percent of red meat consumed worldwide. If you're looking for a leaner alternative to traditional meats, goat meat could be the answer.
Calories & Fat
A 3-ounces portion of goat meat has 122 calories, which is considerably less than beef's 179 and chicken's 162.
In terms of fat, goat is much leaner than other, more readily available meats. Goat meat's 2.6 grams of total fat per 3-ounce serving is about one-third of beef's 7.9 grams and roughly half of chicken's 6.3 grams. So if you do have to watch your fat intake; goat meat can be a good addition to your diet.
Cholesterol & Iron
If you're watching your cholesterol levels, goat meat can again be a nutritious alternative to other meats. Goat's 63.8 milligrams of cholesterol per 3-ounce serving is considerably less than beef and pork's 73.1 milligrams and chicken's 76 milligrams per serving.
Eating goat won't cause you to sacrifice the important blood component, iron, either. Goat meat's 3.2 milligrams of iron per serving trumps beef's 2.9 milligrams and doubles chicken's 1.5 milligrams.
Animal meat is a source of complete proteins, which are proteins containing the eight amino acids your body cannot create on its own. Many people struggle to balance meat's high protein and high fat content.
Goat's 23 grams of protein per serving is comparable to the 25 grams in a serving of beef and chicken, meaning you won't have to sacrifice a key protein source. In fact, a 3-ounce serving of goat fulfills 46 percent of most people's daily value of protein.

Goat meat that is!
We had never actually tried some ourselves and yesterday Emma (my 3 year old) and I took a trip to the abattoir to watch Gilles show us the different parts of the goat and what cuts can be made, etc... It was
quite interesting and the goat meat was a much darker red than I expected... it looks more like beef than lamb.
I tried this recipe: http://www.splendidtable.org/recipes/grilled-goat-chops-with-garlic-oregano-and-lemon and it was delicious!
The meat was very tender and did not taste gamey to us at all (like we expected). Jake said "This is delicious!!! It's even better than beef!" and all our kids finished their plates. :)
